As witches, one problem we may encounter is getting some privacy in order to work a spell and/or ritual. It’s difficult when you are living with other people to burn candles and incense, not to mention chanting and moving around. What’s a witch to do? I used to get round it by staying up later than everyone else in my family, but these days I’d rather be in my bed at a reasonable hour. The solution is to change the way you cast your spells: instead of the full-blown, circle-casting ritual, write them down.

All you need to cast an effective spell is pen and paper. That means you can work magick anywhere and any time you have some free moments to write and focus on your desire. In your bedroom, in the park, library, car, beach, wherever.

Types of Written Spells

  • A straightforward written spell, which I’ll be detailing in this article.
  • Sigils are symbols that are formed from a phrase or short sentence. In depth instructions for working sigil magick can be found here:Witch Sigils: Easy Magick. The great thing about sigils is that you can create them in batches and then release them in one fell swoop.
  • A charm is written on the smallest piece of paper, folded up and carried around in an amulet or folded into your purse.
  • A release spell, to get something or someone out of your life, is written down and almost immediately destroyed.
  • A progressive spell is a series of journal entries that take you from where you are to where you want to be.
  • Speaking of journals, they are a also great place to write down your short spells. Once you’ve done it, you can symbolically turn the page to consign it to the universe’s care.

What You Need

你可以使用任何旧的纸和笔,但是I prefer to keep a special pen and journal for my spells. When I say ‘special’, I just mean that the pen and journal aren’t used for anything else other than magickal work. My pen is a stainless steel Sharpie, which writes beautifully, and my journal is aLemome Classic notebook.

For sigils, I use a bunch of pre-cut3.5 inch paper Zezazu coastersthat are lovely and sturdy. However, they are cheap enough that I don’t mind tearing them up and disposing of them afterwards. I also use black regular Sharpies for thickening the lines and making them more ‘arty’.

Timing

It’s a good idea to determine a good time to cast your spell. For example, the waxing to full moon is a great period for spells that rely on expansion, such as love, or abundance. The waning to dark moon is the best time for reducing spells, such as weight loss or to end a relationship. More information on timing, including the best days of the week to cast certain spells, can be found here:How to Begin Witchcraft: Casting Spells.

The Structure of the Written Spell

All spell work involves at least a small amount of ritual, but in the case of written spells, that is mostly carried out mentally. As always, the basic structure goes like this:

  1. Identify your desire.
  2. Do a little risk assessment. In other words, is it wise to cast this spell? Will it hurt anyone else? What happens if it rebounds on you?
  3. Write it down or create your sigil.
  4. Focus your intent and raise the energy by calling on your strongest emotion.
  5. Release the spell.
  6. Relax into the sure knowledge that it is being dealt with.

That last point is super-important. If you begin to doubt that it won’t happen, it’s never going to happen. So whenever the subject arises in your mind, say to yourself, “I know it’s being taken care of.” Remember that things don’t always happen in a direct way; sometimes the magick takes little divergences in order to bring together the necessary components, events and people. Be open to all possibilities.

I’ll just go into a little more detail about those points made above.

1. Identify Your Desire

Many people, when asked, have no idea what their desires are. So before working magick, make sure you know what you want. For instance, you might think you want a lot of money, but what you really want is money to enable you to take a trip to Hawaii. Therefore your desire is the trip, not the money. Or perhaps you believe you are looking for love. But what you really want is a good friend to spend time with, have a giggle and joke with because you are not quite ready for the full-on commitment of being in a relationship. So be clear on what you want. Take as long as you need. It might help to journal about it.

2. Do a Risk Assessment

Once you have identified your desire, carry out a quick risk assessment by asking and answering these questions:

Scroll to Continue

Read More From Exemplore

  • Am I attempting to manipulate a specific person?
  • Could this spell hurt anyone?
  • Would it be better if I waited to see what unfolds?
  • How would I feel if someone did this spell to or for me?
  • How might this spell rebound on me?
  • What would it be like if this desire manifested and stuck with me forever?

An example: a reader left a comment that when she was 17, she had cast a spell to bring a boy that she had a crush on. It worked, and they became a couple. However, after a few months, she realized it wasn’t working out in the way that she’d hoped but she was unable to break up with him. He just wouldn’t go. Ten years later and, although they are not together, she still has to deal with him in her life.

The lesson to take away from that is to keep your spells general, rather than focused on specific people. So ask for love, by all means, but allow the universe to bring the best match to you. And also, it’s a good idea to include a ‘cancellation clause’. More about that in due course.

3. Write It Down or Create Your Sigil

Self-explanatory. This is the active part of the spell where you write out your magickal words/chant/mantra, or construct your sigil.

4. Focus Your Intent and Raise Energy/Emotion

This part is how you get your desired result ‘out there’. By getting yourself into emotional alignment with the outcome. Presumably getting a positive result is going to make you happy. Or at least happier. So as you read or whisper your spell, you need to reach for the deepest most pure emotion you can.

People have different ways of doing this. Some remember when something made them very happy. Others prefer to visualize the outcome and feel the joy well up within. Even a deep feeling of relief and lightness will work.

If you aren’t in the right mood to get happy about the outcome, then this might not be the best time to do the spell.

5. Release the Spell

As you feel this wave of emotion peak… relax, breathe and let it go.

6. Relax Into the Sure Knowledge Your Spell Will Work

At this point, you should have the strongest feeling of ‘knowing’. Know that it will happen because you just made sure it is going to happen. Have no doubt that your desire will become reality. You’ve just released the spell and put it into the energy field for theUniverseto deal with.

Whenever you think of your desired outcome and the spell you just cast, always think of it positively. Even if it doesn’t happen right away. The Universe is busy getting all the pieces into place and you really don’t want to interfere with all that, so avoid any negative thoughts or doubts around the issue.

Make It Your Own

I’m going to give you two examples of written spells, but as with any spell, it is so much more effective if you adapt it to suit your needs. Even better than that, change the words to your own, so that the spell is unique to you. Then you can really feel it and bring it into reality faster.

So don’t hesitate to change it around, work it your way. You can’t make a mistake with this (unless you are attempting to manipulate someone without their knowledge, of course).

Oh, and it doesn’t have to rhyme. I just like to do it because it's fun.

Built-In Cancellation or Time Limited Clause

Very often we want to be able to cast temporary spells or to, at least, have a way to extricate ourselves from a situation that hasn't worked out. It's quite easy to include a line in the spell that offers an escape route.

So think about saying something like, "This spell will only last for 90 days." or "While we are in agreement." or "Until, out of love, we fall."

The spell below has a built-in escape clause,

如果它是good we’ll stay together
And if it’s not we will untether.

How easy is that? Not all spells need one of these, but it's worth keeping in mind when writing your own chants.

Easy Written Love Spell

I can’t stress the importance of being careful here. If you are trying to attract a certain person into your life, or get them to fall in love with you, then it’s not a good idea. Once someone is bound to you by magick, it is very difficult to untangle that relationship. That may sound exactly what you want, but trust me, as someone whose love interest turned into a two-year stalking nightmare, it may not be. The best kind of love spells are those that bring love without focusing on a specific person.

  • Identify what you want. Do you want passion? Long-lasting love? Maybe just friendship for now?
  • Do your risk assessment as described above.
  • Is this a good time?
  • Have your writing materials to hand.
  • Sit quietly and visualize a sphere of protection rising up around you. Know that you are safe within.

Write down these words, or better still, your own version:

Universe, please light the fire
I’ll fan the flames of love’s desire
Make him (or her) be bold and true
And while it lasts, I’ll not be blue
如果它是good we’ll stay together
And if it’s not we will untether.

As I read these words, so must it be
And it harm none, least of all, me.

慢慢读你的咒语三次。如果它是possible to whisper it aloud, all the better. As your eyes pass over the words, raise the emotion. Imagine being in love. Imagine the fun, the delight of being with someone who cares about you. Take your time and really feel it. Then release and breathe in the sure knowledge that new love is on its way to you.

Now either tear up the spell and dispose of the paper pieces, or firmly turn the page in your journal. There. It’s now consigned to the universe. Allow your sphere of protection to fade away to nothing.

Fast Money Written Spell

Follow the steps for the love spell above. Replace the words with something like this:

Universe, I need some money
One hundred dollars will suffice
Deliver it fast, bring it, honey
Don’t need to be too precise.

As I whisper these words, so must it be
And it harm none, least of all, me.

The emotion to reach for will be relief. Imagine you can do what you need to do when you get the money. Maybe pay a bill, or repay a debt. Feel it as deeply as you can.

And of course, you can change the amount. It’s good to be specific in this case. Be prepared for more. Or less. Whatever shows up, be appreciative. This is a spell you can repeat.

I hope that these suggestions and examples help you to find new and rewarding ways to cast spells.

Questions & Answers

Question:I saw a question about writing a spell down and saying it out loud. If I'm unable to speak it out loud can I just write it down? Or do I need to do both?

Answer:That's what the article addresses... what to do when it's not convenient to speak it aloud or work a complex ritual. Writing it out can be done anywhere it just looks like you are writing down a note. Or when you don't want people to know you practice witchcraft and spell-work. If you can speak it, then do so. If you can't then just write it.

Question:Is it absolutely necessary to write the spells down, or can you just speak the words?

Answer:Well, the point of this method is that the spells are written down. It's for when it's not possible to speak aloud or move around, casting a circle etc. You may prefer this://www.qipsosim.com/wicca-witchcraft/How-To-Begi...

Question:I want to pass an exam. I have done lots of hard work and I am ready to attempt it again if I don't pass. Do you have any spells to help pass an important exam?

Answer:您可以使用t结构上面给出了相应的符号o create your own spell for passing an exam. Or use the love spell structure and just change out the words to suit your purposes. They don't have to rhyme. If you construct your own spells, they are much more powerful than any you find on the internet. The point of the article is to encourage people to make up their own versions.

Question:How is writing a spell out different than manifesting your dreams?

Answer:There's no difference, apart from the fact that casting a spell is usually more focused and intense. There is a structure and a method. The spellcaster knows that the power is in directing energy... and the way to do that is by using emotion in a deliberate manner.

Question:I did the love spell as written above, but now I regret it. What do I do?

Answer:Your question illustrates clearly the importance of being sure that you really want to do a spell. Never rush into performing magick or manipulating energy.

If nothing has happened, then just let it go. It's not a strong spell, and presumably you haven't attempted to manipulate anyone in particular. Love may come into your life, and you can accept it or not. Don't try to cancel it or you may end up blocking out love altogether and that wouldn't be good.

Question:Can you go into more detail about the “cancellation clause” you mentioned when writing spells?

Answer:Ah... I forgot to identify what I meant. Sorry. Look at the Easy Written Love Spell, there is a built-in cancellation/safety/escape clause in there, "If it’s good we’ll stay together. And if it’s not we will untether." That's all it is, a line that provides a way out if things don't work. Of course, you'd have to create your own in the context of the spell.

You wouldn't need it in all spells, just those with an undefined outcome like attracting love. I'll edit the article to make it clearer.

Question:What do you mean when you say the spell could “rebound on you”? How do we protect ourselves when doing spellwork?

Answer:It means that the intent you send out can sometimes come right back at you. Hence it's always a good idea to think it through. If your intent is pure and you are certain that you are doing the spell for good purpose and for good reason, then that will be sufficient protection. If you are aiming to cause harm to another, then you would have to protect yourself by other means.

Question:I have a journal that I don't want anyone to read, what would the best method be to keep people away from it?

Answer:You could place a charm on your journal to protect it. However, the best way is to keep it somewhere private in your own room. If you can keep it in a locked box, so much the better. You might also consider putting a cover of another (boring) book on it and placing it in a bookcase 'in plain sight'.

Question:I cast the easy love spell, when can I expect results?

Answer:When it is the right time. All kinds of things have to be in place to get you and your new love to meet. The best thing now is to know that it will come and let the Universe deal with it. If you keep wondering when it's going to happen, you'll push it away. Allow and let go.

Question:我想要拯救我的朋友的一段时间relationship but only if her boyfriend still loves her. I don't know how to go about it. Everything I have seen about love spells are centered around oneself. How do I make a love spell for someone else's relationship?

Answer:The simple answer is: don't. It is not a good idea to interfere with other people's complex relationships. Feelings are too volatile and what seems right at the current time could easily change in a week or a month. You could end up causing immense distress. Instead, be the wise one who holds back. If you have to pick up the pieces, then so be it, but please don't mess around with other people's lives and well-being.

Question:My circumstances are changing and I'm losing a lot of friends. I need new friends. Is there a spell that can help?

Answer:You could try creating a written spell or sigil using the instructions outlined in the article.

Question:There are a couple of classmates who cheat on schoolwork and get away with it daily. How could I write a spell to stop this? I work hard and study for school and take it very seriously but they don't and it affects me since the teachers side with them and give them easy grades. Any assistance would be honoured.

Answer:You can't interfere in this way, I'm afraid. You should simply focus on your own work. Sooner or later, your classmates' luck will run out. The last thing you want is to have a spell like that rebound on you.

Question:I just tried the fast money written spell but nothing has happened yet. Why is this money spell not working for me?

Answer:If you've 'just' tried it, you haven't given it enough time. It's not going to appear in front of you in a puff of smoke - that's not how it works. Also if you are looking for results, doubting the effectiveness of the spell, then you are keeping the money manifestation away.

Question:How long does a love spell take to form? How long will it take for the specific person to fall in love while under a love spell?

Answer:It will take as long as it takes. There's no time limit on magic. However, warning: never do a love spell directed at a specific person. You would be messing with their energy, emotions, and actions. Always keep love spells general, as in, a spell to attract 'a person', not 'that person'.

Think about it, I'm sure you would rather someone be with you because they want to, rather than if they have been forced to. If that person is interested in you, then they will gravitate to you naturally. If they are not, then someone better will come along.

No, Kijal, you don't need anything other than the power of your mind and emotions. Oh... and the ability to trust the universe.

Hi Alize,

You are way too young to be practicing any kind of witchcraft, especially black magic. The meaning of the word 'witch' is wise woman or man, and it takes a few years before a person is ready to be one of those. Just hang on for a bit and wait and see.

你好所以我11岁了,我想学些东西g like black magic but wont bring anything mean in but i dont know how to tell any one because my family is catholic but before i was born my mom used black magic so i dont know what to do.

Hi Lester,

None. Or as many as you like. It's important to remember that a spell will work better if you write it yourself. That means tweaking those you find in books and on the web.

I love how you said you might want to include a cancellation clause.

Interesting work here.

Makes sense!! Thanks for your insight!

Bev G (author)from Wales, UK on April 30, 2019:

I was thinking about your question, Michelle, while I was washing my hair this morning. I think that anything you want to increase, such as beauty, would be best done during the waxing/full moon. Anything you want to banish, like gray hair or wrinkles should be done during the waning/dark moon. But, as I said, it never occurred to me before :)

Michelle Schrollon April 30, 2019:

Yes I'm just trimming and shaping it. And Thank You for your response! And I love your postings, it's really helping me with my path.

Bev G (author)from Wales, UK on April 29, 2019:

I've found that not having my hair cut is the fastest way to grow my hair, Michelle, I only trim it when the desired length is reached. Mine's almost waist-length.

If you are talking about thickening your hair growth and styling, that's different. I never thought about when would be the best time to have my hair done. Go with what feels right to you :)

Michelle Schrollon April 29, 2019:

Ok this is probably the wrong area to ask this but... I've been doing a hair growth spell during the waxing moon phase. But what about hair cuts? Have it done during the waxing moon phase as well or during the waning moon phase???

asofiapereiraon April 17, 2019:

thanks for the love spell!! I have been trying to make one more directed to friendship because I want to understand him and he doesn't really talk... to many people.
